Indonesia posts US$1b balance of payments surplus in fourth quarter of 2017
Indonesia recorded a US$1 billion balance of payments surplus within the fourth quarter of 2017 on the rear of up capital and monetary accounts amid rising inflows.
The overall balance of payments surplus throughout 2017 reached $11.6 billion, indicating balanced external conditions supporting economic science stability, aforementioned Bank Indonesia’s (BI) secretary for communications Junanto Herdiawan in a very statement.
Capital and monetary accounts saw a surplus of $6.5 billion within the fourth quarter last year amid capitalist optimism toward Indonesia’s economy and improvement in yields of domestic monetary assets. However, the excess recorded was lower compared to 1 / 4 earlier.
The lower surplus in capital and monetary accounts was caused by many factors, the primary being a declining surplus in direct investment, together with in oil and gas.
Another issue was a decrease in surplus of portfolio investment attributable to outflows of foreign cash in rupiah-denominated securities given the rising uncertainty in international monetary markets within the early fourth quarter of 2017.
However, the country remained to examine rising capital inflows, that helped drive its interchange reserves to its highest purpose at $130.2 billion as of December last year, enough to finance up to eight.3 months of imports and foreign debt.
The deficit within the accounting, meanwhile, rose to $5.8 billion, or 2.2 % of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), within the fourth quarter of 2017. The deficit was higher compared to $4.6 billion, or 1.7 % of GDP, recorded within the earlier quarter.
The overall accounting deficit throughout 2017 stood at $17.3 billion, or 1.7 % of GDP.
Junanto attributed the rising accounting deficit to the declining surplus within the balance attributable to higher will increase in imports compared to exports, and therefore the billowy deficit within the services balance.(gda)
